MICROMANAGEMENT FILES #003 - “Software that screenshots my screen every 5 minutes.”

MICROMANAGEMENT FILES #003 - “Software that screenshots my screen every 5 minutes.”

I work as a senior developer on an IT team. Normally, I’d be focused on code, architecture, bug fixes. Instead… every 5 minutes my screen gets photographed.

The software is “for security and productivity.” No one mentions that the main goal is to assume we’ll cheat if we’re not being monitored.

At first, I thought it was paranoia. Now I’ve learned the rule: nothing can stay open longer than 4 minutes. Slack chats, documents, email previews — everything must look “active” in the screenshot.

The irony? The code I write in those 5 minutes isn’t worse, but the feeling of constant oversight kills focus. Sometimes I wait for the screenshot to be taken before closing a window with an error. As if my trust is just another metric.

The worst part isn’t that the software exists.
The worst part is that I started planning my work habits around it.
